The story begins, in 1962, with the opening of Calandra's Bakery in Newark, New Jersey. Luciano Calandra, an Italian immigrant, lives in America for just five years when he begins a self-owned small Italian and French bakery. Mr. Calandra, and his wife Ortenza, work hard day and night. The business takes off, and the bakery quickly develops a reputation for its delicious bread. Mr. and Mrs. Calandra's two sons, Anthony and Luciano Jr., join the family business. Mr. Calandra not only teaches his sons the inner workings of the bakery, he also instills in them his business principles: a strong work ethic, an emphasis on family, and a belief that the customer is always right. Over 50 years later, this philosophy directs the family business. Voted #1 Bakery, the Newark location is a 50,000 square foot operation, in addition to the newer locations in Fairfield and Caldwell. The three bakeries deliver products to more than 500 supermarkets, delis, and restaurants in the tri-state area. Restaurants and hotels owned by the Calandra family also feature famous bread and bakery items. Two qualities remain unchanged since 1962: Calandra's Bakery is synonymous with delicious bread, and the family’s drive focuses on hard work, traditional family values, and a focus on customer service.

I grew up around the original newark location and can vividly remember going with my nonna for rolls and cookies. Then and now, Calandras has been one of the best bakeries around. No one can do it like them!!!!
