For its 11th Annual Walk Against Domestic Violence on Saturday, September 18th, Start Out Fresh Intervention Advocates (S.O.F.I.A.) welcomes the community to affirm support for those affected by domestic violence and intimate partner violence. Their message continues to be that “With Awareness There is Hope.” The walk will be in Montclair’s Canterbury Park on Planchet Drive—or wherever participants walk. Last year’s in-person and virtual options were highly popular, and they are continuing this hybrid option in the wake of the continuing effects of COVID19.
S.O.F.I.A. is excited to host Carol Cohn as Grand Marshal for the event. Ms. Cohn is an outsider artist who began creating personal work in the aftermath of a long marriage. She has seen many kinds of domestic abuse and believes that S.O.F.I.A.’s mission is so important, especially in this COVID-ridden world. She is a published commercial illustrator, and her work is exhibited regularly in many areas, most recently as part of Fresh Air Montclair. Ms. Cohn is honored to represent this important organization and the amazing work they do. The S.O.F.I.A. Board is thrilled that Ms. Cohn will be joining them as Grand Marshal this year.
Cynthia Walker, executive director and founder of S.O.F.I.A., said, “An important part of why S.O.F.I.A. holds its annual Walk is to show our survivors, as well as those still in abusive relationships, that they have a community of support available to them. Coming together in public for the Walk Against Domestic Violence minimizes the stigma and raises awareness about warning signs and resources. We hope you will join us!”
